The state of Ceará covers an area of about 56,505.4 sq mi and offers a number of top kite spots thanks to its 356 miles of coastline. Of the 8.8 million inhabitants, around 2.6 million live in Fortaleza. This is also where the Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR) is located. The crime rate is quite high in the capital, but it decreases rapidly the further you get away from it. Especially worth seeing are the large pink sand dunes in the seaside resort Canoa Quebrada which is located 100 miles east of Fortaleza. About 186 miles by car to the west is the very well-known Jericoacoara, located in the middle of the national park, which is often just called Jeri for the sake of simplicity.
